Mid-Atlantic Primitive Skills Group

Who We Are:

MAPS is a group that, since 1997, has been devoted to helping its members become more proficient at the whole range of primitive skills and living in harmony with the Earth.  The only prerequisite is a love and respect for the Earth and a desire to learn the skills of living with the Earth in a harmonious and sustainable manner.  Simply put, we believe that the best and deepest way to connect with Nature is to learn to live with the Earth in the same intimate way that indigenous peoples all over the world have done for eons.

 What We Do:

We meet regularly to learn and share ancient skills such as tracking, awareness, edible plant identification and harvesting, bow making and shooting, hide tanning, cordage making, flint knapping, fire making, basket making, pottery, primitive shelter construction, and other earth skills.  We usually meet in the Greater Washington D.C. area.  We are also sponsors of the MAPS Meet, a national primitive skills rendezvous held every year in June.  All are welcome regardless of skill level or age.

The registration for MAPS Meet 2008, being run by Ancestral Knowledge again this year, is now open!

 What's New:

Nothing at the moment...

 Quote of the Month:

A Native American Prayer

"Oh Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds,
and whose breath gives life to all things, hear me.
I come to you as one of your many children.
I am small and weak, I need your strength and your wisdom.
May I walk in beauty.  May my eyes ever behold the glorious sunrise,
and may they see as much mystery in your small miracles as in your great ones.
Make my hands respect the things you have created,
and my ears sharp enough to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children,
the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Make me strong, not to overcome my brothers,
but to be able to fight my greatest enemy, myself.
Make me ever ready to come to you with pure hands and straight eyes,
so that when my life fades as the fading sunset,
my spirit may come to you and stand before you, without shame."
