MAPS Group

Mid-Atlantic Primitive Skills Group

Is the MAPS Group a non-profit organization?

0Rating:

No. We are not.

A non-profit organization is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals.  Whereas a for-profit organization exists to earn and re-distribute taxable wealth to owners, employees and shareholders, the non-profit corporation exists solely to provide programs and services that are of self-benefit.

MAPS Group is a for-profit organization currently managed by LoneNomadic, a Limited Liability company, incorporated in the state of Maryland.  This makes financial donations not eligible as tax-deductible; however, any money donated goes directly to support MAPS Group administrative and event costs.

The MAPS Group is being managed to provide programs and services that are of self-benefit to the group as a whole; non-profit like but without all the baggage.  LoneNomadic's goal is to grow the MAPS Group membership and make it financially self-sustaining prior to passing on the Coordinator's job to the next person.  Obtaining just compensation for these efforts along the way is only fair.

Limited Liability does provide some legal protection to the MAPS Coordinator, because practicing primitive skills is inherently dangerous and people are inherently clumsy.

Limited liability is a concept whereby a person's financial liability is limited to a fixed sum, most commonly the value of a person's investment in a company or partnership with limited liability.

HOWEVER... read this carefully.

For-profit doesn’t mean we are trying to make lots of $$$ from MAPS members, MAPS events or from the MAPS website. On the contrary. LoneNomadic is only a temporary manager of the MAPS Group that is looking for "just compensation" or some margin of profit for efforts to provide goods and services to MAPS members.

Yes, I know. Not a very good business model. But, LoneNomadic has other ventures.

Since we are officially a business, we also must pay Uncle Sam his due. Any and alll profits will be retained by LoneNomadic as income and are not transferable to the next MAPS Coordinator.

A business (also called a company, enterprise or firm) is a legally recognized organization designed to provide goods and/or services to consumers.  Businesses are predominant in capitalist economies, most being privately owned and formed to earn profit that will increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a financial return in exchange for work and acceptance of risk.

LoneNomadic's intention is to pass the MAPS Coordinator mantle to the next eligible person on or about 2015.

While LoneNomadic may be able to earn a surplus, more accurately called a profit, managing the MAPS Group, such earnings are intended to be retained for the self-preservation, expansion and future plans of the MAPS Group. This is called reinvestment to grow the business; in this case, MAPS Group.

We will attempt to remain fiscally transparent with MAPS members regarding funds available for the Group as a whole.

A future option to the MAPS Group is forming a Cooperative or a 501(c)(7) a Social and Recreational Club.

A cooperative (also co-operative; often referred to as a co-op or coop) is defined by the International Co-operative Alliance's Statement on the Co-operative Identity as an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. It is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit.
